Rinkhals seen in the Western Cape, South Africa

Hemachatus haemachatus

This rinkhals sighting occurred a few kilometres from the City of Cape Town boundary. Although this is not in the research study area, each sighting of rinkhals provides us with valuable data such as the habitat and the time of day that the snake was seen.

Although this picture is of low quality, the diagnostic features of the rinkhals can still be seen; white crossbars on the throat and the defensive display of spreading a hood. If you look at the picture closely, you will notice the banding on top of the snake as well.

I find that new records are always exciting. Now just to plan a trip to go and find another one myself!

If you have a rinkhals sighting please let me know…
